Impact of Vitamin-D Supplementation on Bone Mineral Density In Postmenopausal Women

Abha Pandey1*, Shweta Dwivedi2

Abstract:

Background: The impact of vitamin D supplementation on bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women is crucial due to the increased risk of osteoporotic fractures associated with low BMD. This study aims to investigate if vitamin D supplementation can increase or prevent a decrease in BMD in this population. Additionally, it seeks to assess the effects of supplementation on biochemical markers of bone health and explore optimal dosage and duration for maximizing BMD gains. Material and Methods: The study employed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 100 postmenopausal women. Recruitment was conducted across all seasons to consider ultraviolet B's effect. Baseline data included weight, height, BMI, and body composition. Biochemical analyses included 25(OH)D, bone turnover markers, calcium, phosphate, and PTH levels. Results: The study found that vitamin D supplementation significantly increased 25(OH)D levels and decreased bone turnover markers in postmenopausal women. The participants in the vitamin D group showed significant improvements in bone mineral density (BMD) compared to the control group at different time points, with p values of 0.024 at three months, 0.007 at six months, 0.003 at twenty-four months. However, the difference in BMD change was not significant at twelve months (p = 0.187) and thirty-six months (p = 0.432). Additionally, higher doses of vitamin D showed greater increases in BMD, with significant p values for 400 IU/day, 800 IU/day, and 4000 IU/day at various skeletal sites. Conclusion: Vitamin D supplementation significantly increased 25(OH)D levels and improved bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. Higher doses of vitamin D were associated with greater increases in BMD. These findings suggest that vitamin D supplementation may be beneficial for maintaining bone health in postmenopausal women.
